Staff Selection Commission (SSC) 

 

SSC is an Organization under Government of India to recruit staff for various posts in the various Ministries and Departments of the Government of India and in Subordinate Offices.

Staff Selection Commission - Combined Graduate Level Examination, often referred to as SSC CGL is an examination conducted to recruit staff to various posts in ministries, departments and organisations of the Government of India. It is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission for selecting staff for various Group B and Group C posts. The Staff Selection Commission was established in 1975

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) Exam for recruitment to various subordinate services like:

• Inspectors of Income Tax.
• Preventive Officers in Customs.
• Examiner in Customs.

• Assistant Enforcement Officer in Directorate of Enforcement, Department of Revenue.
• Divisional Accountant, Jr. Accountant, Auditor & UDCs in various offices of Govt. of India.
• Auditor Offices under C&AG, CGDA, CGA & others.
• Accountant/ Junior Accountant
• Tax Assistant in CBDT and CBEC

• Compiler in Registrar General of India.



Age required for SSC CGL 2017-18

The age of SSC CGL 2017 will be reckoned as on August 01, 2017. Date of Birth will be considered as recorded in the Matriculation/ Secondary Examination Certificate only will be accepted by the Commission for determining the age

 Age Relaxation: The upper age limit of the certain category has been relaxed. The permissible relaxation of upper age as per category is given below.

1.for SC/ST      - 05  Years
2.for OBC        - 03  Years
3.for PH           - 10  Years
4.PH-OBC       - 13  Years
5.PH+SC/ST    - 15  Years


Educational Qualification for SSC CGL


Assistant Audit Officer:
  • Essential Qualifications: Bachelor’s Degree from recognised University or Institute
  • Desirable Qualifications: Chartered Accountant or cost & Management Accountant or Company Secretary or Masters in Commerce or Masters in Business Studies or Masters in Business Administration (Finance) or Masters in Business Economics.
Statistical Investigator Grade – II
  • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject from a recognised University or Institute with at least 60% in Mathematics at 12th standard level or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the subjects at degree level
Compiler: Bachelor’s Degree from any recognised University with Economics or Statistics or Mathematics as compulsory or Elective subject

All other Posts: Bachelor’s Degree from a recognised University or equivalent.

For posts of Assistant Section Officer (CSS), Computer Proficiency Test is also as an Essential Qualification



Structure of SSC CGL Examination

The examination consists of a Preliminary Examination followed by a Main examination. Earlier it also used to have interviews, but following a government order, interviews have been dispensed off for all non-gazetted posts in the central government. A computer proficiency test or a skill test will also be held for some posts


Preliminary Examination or SSC CGL TIER-1
The preliminary examination will be out of 200 marks. It will have 4 sections, which have to be completed in a total time of 60 minutes(from cgl 2017).
  • General Intelligence and Reasoning- 25 bits    50 marks
  • General Awareness                              - 25 bits    50 marks
  • Quantitative Aptitude                         - 25 bits    50 marks
  • English Comprehension                   - 25 bits    50 marks
Negative Marking: There will be negative marking of 0.5 marks for each wrong answer in the Tier I exam.


SYLLABUS FOR TIER-1 SSC CGL

 

A. General Intelligence & Reasoning :

It would include questions of both verbal and non-verbal type. This component may include questions on analogies, similarities and differences, space visualization, spatial orientation, problem solving, analysis, judgement, decision making, visual memory, discrimination, observation, relationship concepts, arithmetical reasoning and figural classification, arithmetic number series, non-verbal series, coding and decoding, statement conclusion, syllogistic reasoning etc. The topics are, Semantic Analogy, Symbolic/Number Analogy, Figural Analogy, Semantic Classification, Symbolic/Number Classification, Figural Classification, Semantic Series, Number Series, Figural Series, Problem Solving, Word Building, Coding & de-coding, Numerical Operations, symbolic Operations, Trends, Space Orientation, Space Visualization, Venn Diagrams, Drawing inferences, Punched hole/pattern –folding & un-folding, Figural Pattern – folding and completion, Indexing, Address matching, Date & city matching, Classification of centre codes/roll numbers, Small & Capital letters/numbers coding, decoding and classification, Embedded Figures, Critical thinking, Emotional Intelligence, Social Intelligence, Other sub-topics, if any.

B. General Awareness :

Questions in this component will be aimed at testing the candidates general awareness of the environment around him and its application to society. Questions will also be designed to test knowledge of current events and of such matters of every day observations and experience in their scientific aspect as may be expected of any educated person. The test will also include questions relating to India and its neighbouring countries especially pertaining History, Culture, Geography, Economic Scene, General Policy & Scientific Research.

C. Quantitative Aptitude :

The questions will be designed to test the ability of appropriate use of numbers and number sense of the candidate. The scope of the test will be computation of whole numbers, decimals ,fractions and relationships between numbers, Percentage. Ratio & Proportion,Square roots, Averages, Interest, Profit and Loss, Discount, Partnership Business, Mixture and Alligation, Time and distance, Time & Work, Basic algebraic identities of School Algebra & Elementary surds, Graphs of Linear Equations, Triangle and its various kinds of centres, Congruence and similarity of triangles, Circle and its chords, tangents, angles subtended by chords of a circle, common tangents to two or more circles, Triangle, Quadrilaterals, Regular Polygons , Circle, Right Prism, Right Circular Cone, Right Circular Cylinder, Sphere, Hemispheres, Rectangular Parallelepiped, Regular Right Pyramid with triangular or square base, Trigonometric ratio, Degree and Radian Measures, Standard Identities, Complementary angles, Heights and Distances, Histogram, Frequency polygon, Bar diagram & Pie chart.

D. English Comprehension :

Candidates’ ability to understand correct English, his basic comprehension and writing ability, etc. would be tested.
The questions in Posts A,B & D will be of a level commensurate with the Essential Qualification prescribed for the post viz graduation and questions in Part C will be of 10+2 level.

Arranging words in Meaningful order or Dictionary order
Types: It can be a meaningful order of doing a certain task, or following a certain rule.In dictionary order words are to be arranged according to dictionary sequence in ascending or descending order.

Word formation
Types: From the given word find whether the given option words can be formed or not.

Staff Selection Commission CGL Syllabus 2017 – English

One Word Substitution
  • Types of Questions: Substitute one word for the phrase given. Go through a list of the one-word substitutions from previous papers and solve questions on one-word substitution.

Spellings
  • Types of Questions: Choose the correctly spelled word (or) the misspelled word from different words. The same word can be
    spelled in different ways and you are asked to select the correct spelling.

Fill in the Blanks

Comprehension
  • Types of questions: The Passages based on any topic. Questions are mostly fact based & can be directly picked out of the given Passage. Sometimes vocabulary questions will be asked on commonly used words.

Error Spotting
  • Type of Questions: Tenses, Subject-Verb Agreement, Article-Noun Agreement, Correct Part of Speech, Correct use of Prepositions, Parallelism, Phrasal Verbs, Sentence Construction, Degree of Comparison, Correct use of different parts of speech.
  • Weightage: 3-5 Questions
  • Level:  Time Consuming, Moderate Accuracy Possible, Moderately Scoring
Phrase Replacement/Sentence Correction
Types of Questions: A mix of grammar & vocabulary Based questions.
Important Topics: Subject-Verb Agreement, Article-Noun Agreement, Correct Part of Speech, Correct use of Prepositions, Parallelism, Phrasal Verbs, Sentence Construction, Degree of Comparison, Correct use of different parts of speech, Tenses, Easily confusable words, Usage in Context, Avoid guessing too much in these questions. Be aware of no improvement questions

  • Types of Questions: The meaning of the phrase or idiom can be asked in the sentence. The meaning can also be asked in a direct way.

  1. The Tier 2 exam is Computer Based Test.
  2. Candidates can be selected from Tier II exam by Category wise cut off marks set by SSC Board.
  3. The SSC CGL Tier II Exam consist four papers.
  4. The Common Graduate Level Tier II Exam Paper 1 and 2 is mandatory for Tier 1 qualified individuals, Whereas Paper 3 for Statistical Investigator post applicants and Paper 4 for Assistant Audit Officer vacancy applicants.
  5. The Exam Duration: 2 Hours.


Main Examination

The main examination will also have four sections. Section 1 and 2 will be compulsory for all candidates who have qualified.Section 3 and 4 are only for candidates who have applied for special posts.

SSC has also decided to add a paper based descriptive paper which can be attempted in English or Hindi for Essay, Precis, Letter writing. Besides a Data Entry Skill Test or a Computer Proficiency Test will also be held for some positions. This paper replaced the interview of 100 mark.





SSC CGL TIER 3 EXAM PATTERN


SSC CGL Tier 3 Analysis and Questions Asked

The descriptive paper is introduced in SSC CGL exam to test the writing skills of the students. Tier 3 paper was of 100 Marks & you were allotted 60 minutes to complete it. Below is the SSC CGL Tier 3 Analysis and Questions Asked:
  • Essay writing

Topics: In the event of an earthquake, for your safety what u should do and what you should not do.
Word Limit – 250 Words
Marks – 50 Marks
  • Letter Writing

Topic: Assuming that you are Suresh/Seema, Write a letter to your younger brother Naresh, highlighting the distinct benefits and shortcomings of Computer Based Recruitment test, and what will be the future shortfall of it.
Word Limit – 150 Words
Marks – 50 Marks
Point To be Noted:
  1. This time no choice was given to students. You have to answer the question on the topics mentioned above. Usually, two topics are given for each type of writing & you have to choose any one in which you are more comfortable.
  2. The Answer sheet was provided to students. Answer sheet consists of 12 pages and each page consisted 4 columns and 14 rows.
  3. It was strictly mentioned that you have to follow the word limit. However, you can exceed only 10% of the word limit.
  4. You were allowed to write the exam in the black/blue pen. Pens were not provided in the exam hall & you have to bring your own pens.
  5. The exam started at 11 AM & finished at 12 PM.
 SSC CGL EXAM TIER 4 

These tests are qualifying in nature. So you only need to pass them — marks will not be added to your total score. Below mentioned are the details of both CP and DEST.

Computer Proficiency Test (CPT)

Computer Proficiency  Test is a qualifying test conducted by SSC for the post of Assistants (CSS) & FCI and have different questions of Word Processing, Spread Sheets and generation of slides.
The skill test in computer Proficiency in a qualifying test only. It will consist of two Modules in the following manner:
Module-1 : Test in Spread Sheets on Microsoft Excel: 15 Minutes
Module 2: Test in Power Point (Microsoft Power Point): 15 Minutes
After each module, candidates will take printout of the saved files and will submit to the invigilator after signed by the candidates on each page with roll number and name clearly written on each page.
Immediately after the test is over, the candidate will have to write in his/her own handwriting one paragraph of about 50-60 words from the passage given to his/her on a separate sheet and will have to put his/her name, roll no. and signature at the end. This is done to verify and ensure that you were present in the examination and not someone else.

Data Entry Speed Test

DEST comprises only typing test in which students have to make 2000 key depressions in 15 minutes. It is the speed test which can be cleared easily by practice.
